On behalf of the university, Yunsong Chen welcomed all the guests and thanked Citi China for its long-term support and assistance to the development of Nanjing University. Cultivating FinTech Talent for Financial Innovation

The 16th Citi Financial Innovation Application Competition (‘Citi Cup’) recently kicked off in Shanghai. Citi Cup Awards Celebrate Young Talents in Financial Innovation in Chengdu
The 13th annual Citi Financial Innovation Application Competition ("Citi Cup") announced its results at Sichuan University on Nov 25th 2017. For the past twelve years, Citi Cup has been devoted to cultivating financial and technology talent in China and regarded as a benchmark in this field. Team “Reaper” from Nanjing University snagged the highly-coveted award with their “Fund Investment Advisor System based on evaluations from multi-aspects”. Under the program sponsorship, Citi has launched following activities in financial IT education: • Partner with Southwestern University of Finance and Economics for basic bank IT knowledge books and trainings, published 3 volume basic bank IT knowledge books, and trained teachers from 20 universities interested in financial IT education career; • Co-found in 2007 and operate the financial information engineering major with Beijing University till now; • Co-found in September 2011 the financial information engineering experimental class with Wuhan University, to provide tailor-made bank IT course, internship and trainings in CSTS; • Established Citi Financial IT/Service trainings in Dalian University of Foreign Language, Dalian University of Technology, South China University of Technology, and Sun Yat-Sen University.
A platform to optimize financial planning in households, an intelligent ATM monitoring system, an application to generate analytical reports for environmentally-friendly products – these were some of the breakthrough ideas that emerged from this year’s Citi Cup Financial Information Technology (IT) Application Competition in China.
Now in its eight year, the Citi Cup winners were announced on October 27 at Wuhan University. A team from the University snagged the highly-coveted award, outdoing 123 other groups with their winning “Smart Loan System for Micro-Finance Institution” project. Launched in 2005, the Citi Cup Financial IT Application Competition aims to drive the application of Information Technology in the financial industry. To date, around 10,000 students and teachers have participated in the competition and over 200,000 have been reached out to through campus activities. Present at the awards ceremony were Citi China Head of Human Resources Yu Jin, Head of Citigroup Software Technology and Services (China) Limited Gary Li, Vice Principal of Wuhan University Li Fei, and government officials from the Ministry of Education in China. “Citi has been a leading supporter of financial IT education in China for many years now and we are pleased to see the Citi Cup competition make positive contributions to the development of this sector and its talent pool. This is key to the sustainable success of the Chinese financial industry,” said Yu Jin.
Gary added, “In the last eight years, the Citi Cup has developed into a nationwide event with students from over 40 leading universities participating each year. It has given a significant boost to raising awareness around the importance of technology in the financial sector while also building a bridge between academia and industry.”
This year’s competition, launched in April, saw around 1,100 students from 43 universities submit entries. Following six months of preparation, initial screenings and a one-day final competition, a number of prizes were awarded including Best Mainframe Product and Best Digital Banking Project. Principle Li warmly welcomed all guests to the ceremony and praised student participants for their innovative spirit. He said, “I believe the joint efforts of Citi and Wuhan University will make great contributions to the cultivation of IT talent, the development of the industry and the progress of society.”
Citi launches new financial education initiative in Dalian
Dalian - Citi, in partnership with the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics ("SWUFE"), today announced a new two-year initiative designed to further develop financial knowledge among those working in the information technology ("IT") sector in China. The initiative, made possible through a Citi Foundation grant, will see the publication of new text books as well as the organization of two Training-of-Trainer (TOT) sessions for IT teachers from 20 leading universities across the country. The announcement was made at the opening of the first training session in Dalian, attended by representatives from SWUFE, Citi China, as well as IT teachers from 12 leading universities across China. Andrew Au, CEO of Citi China, said, "Citi understands the important role played by technology in supporting a flourishing and world-class financial services sector. We are proud to be playing a leading role through initiatives such as this one towards expanding the IT talent pool in financial services in China for the long-term benefit of China’s financial services industry." Yang Jirui, Deputy Party Secretary of SWUFE, said, "Thanks to Citi’s support, this initiative will help bridge the gap between the academic and practical worlds in financial IT education. " In addition to funding support, we are delighted that Citi has been an extensive contributor of knowledge, in the development of the new text books." The initiative has been built on the success of a similar program launched by Citi in 2006, which saw the creation of China’s first financial IT textbook, entitled "Basic Banking Knowledge for IT Personnel." The new program will see two additional books developed, the first of which is currently being written by a team of leading academics and industry practitioners, and is expected to be available in December 2009. The training-of-trainer's program will see teachers participate in a series of intensive courses to acquire a better understanding of the application of information technology in modern banking. Teachers will be certified after successfully completing the training, and will be encouraged to incorporate their newly acquired financial and banking knowledge into their own teaching curriculum. |
