As a global bank, our mission has always been about enabling progress, which puts us in a strong position to stand for important issues and catalyze change. That is why we are announcing a global partnership with World Food Programme and have contributed a $200,000 donation to kick off the campaign.
The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization helping to end food insecurity worldwide. They do this by providing life-saving relief in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impacts of climate change.
Right now, WFP is taking on its most ambitious effort to date: seeking to provide lifesaving meals to 150 million of the world’s most vulnerable people in more than 120 countries and territories this year.
WFP’s strategy is to serve the most food insecure people in the world. Physical food distribution continues to be a large part of its work, but more and more, WFP is providing cash assistance including through innovations in mobile payments. In many contexts where WFP works, food is available in local markets but it is too expensive for people to buy. WFP provides people money, so they choose what to buy during a crisis and satisfy their different essential needs. In the past, Citi’s expertise has helped to make this approach possible by supporting WFP’s innovative mobile payment system plugPAY in Zambia; allowing WFP to transfer cash directly to refugees’ bank accounts or mobile wallets of choice in communities where it is needed most. Thanks to the support of partners like Citi, the organization can focus on its efforts to achieve zero hunger worldwide.
As well as providing financial support, as part of this new global partnership we are bringing together Citi’s voice, business capabilities and strategic philanthropy to support WFP’s mission, by collaborating across our Aston Martin Aramco Formula One and Global Citizen sponsorships to drive donations as WFP seeks to tackle the growing hunger crisis worldwide.
Citi and Aston Martin Aramco Formula One
For the second year in a row, we are proud to partner with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One® Team. Starting this weekend in Miami, Citi is sharing its sponsorship space on racecars with WFP, with the goal of driving awareness of the organization and donations to support their mission. This promotion will continue through races in Imola and Monaco throughout May.
Citi and Global Citizen
We are also working with longtime partner Global Citizen to drive donations to WFP.
Citi participated in a panel at Global Citizen NOW in New York City, titled “Solutions to our Hunger Crisis.” We joined Paul Skoczylas from WFP, discussing the ways we are working together to make an impact – including financial payment innovations, the 2023 Global Innovation Challenge grant from the Citi Foundation and the work it’s funding, and the need for public private partnership to address global issues of this magnitude.
In addition, we’re working with Global Citizen to launch opportunities for individuals to take action in support of WFP and earn rewards. Participants will learn more about the issue of global hunger and encouraged to support WFP.
