This evening, CEO Mike Corbat will accept the Corporate Leadership Award from the American Red Cross on behalf of Citi and our 240,000 people in 100 countries. The Vision Statement for the American Red Cross is "to always be there in time of need." For nearly a century, we at Citi have given our time, our energy, financial support as well as our blood to support the mission of this great organization - to save lives and provide urgently needed disaster relief to people everywhere in the world, at any time.
We're proud of a partnership that dates back nearly a century—to the trenches and field hospitals of Belgium and France during World War I. In 1917, Citi Executive Committee member and later Citi Chairman James H. Perkins was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the American Red Cross in France. Perkins went on to serve as the Red Cross Commissioner for Europe.
More recently, and certainly closer to home, nearly 500 of our dedicated employee volunteers played a critical role in distributing relief supplies during and after Hurricane Sandy. And just a few months ago, colleagues in New York joined together to write thank-you notes and put together comfort kits for our military personnel on active duty overseas, to their families, and to veterans right here at home.
Over the past few weeks, you may have seen the specially decorated Citi Bikes around New York City. They're part of our month-long "Citi Bike for Good" initiative, which lets Citi Bike riders support three of NYC's most impactful not-for-profit organizations each time they take a ride on a Citi Bike. One of the three is the American Red Cross of Greater New York, and we're pleased to announce that, as of yesterday, Citi will donate $50,000 for the American Red Cross and $150,000 overall as a result of the initiative!
We would like to thank the American Red Cross for this great honor and longstanding partnership, and we hope that over the course of the next century, together our two organizations will be able to do even more.
