Change of Czech Republic CSD Project: What are the long and short term implications for participants?
7 July 2010

On 7 July 2010, the CDCP started functioning and became the new Central Securities Depository (CSD) in the Czech Republic. The transition will inevitably impact the market and it is important for participantso be aware of the potential risks that may arise relating to the Czech securities settlement on the day of transition and the short period following.

General meeting of shareholders – Citi Handlowy update on market standards and proxy voting process in Poland
20 May 2010

Following the efforts of a Citi Handlowy-led initiative on shareholders meetings and proxy voting, a Steering Committee and three working groups have subsequently been established to review Shareholders' Meetings Standards and to formalise common market practices within the new framework relating to shareholders' meetings and proxy voting.

The first draft of the standards report was published in August 2009, it is anticipated that the second draft will be available in April 2010. In this presentation we shared further details including the scope of the proposed standards and how it will impact our clients in the future.

European Shareholder Rights Directive in Italy: Where Do We Stand?
6 May 2010

Citi Milan was pleased to provide an update on the status of the implementation of the European Shareholder Rights Directive in the Italian Market. This webinar focused on:

  • The major changes to the General Meetings participation rules
  • Introduction of the record date concept
  • Electronic voting
  • Innovations to proxy services provided by issuers
  • Shareholder disclosure requirements

Citi continues to be directly involved in discussions and meetings with regulators with the aim of implementing this directive in Italy in the most efficient way. Changes are due to become effective for meetings called after November 1, 2010.

Nevertheless, lenders have understandably become more cautious and attitudes have changed in a number of areas. Meeting the Currency Challenge: Currency Hedging
23 September 2009

There continues to be much FX volatility. Between August and October 2008, more than 80% of the returns on a World Government Bond Index-type portfolio were down to FX movements. And that was at a time when underlying bond prices were themselves highly volatile. Not surprisingly, interest in currency hedging has risen sharply. FX volatility has fallen back from the peak levels seen late last year but remains high by historic standards. Failing to hedge at least part of a funds currency exposure is no longer seen as an option.

Citi’s Online Academy: CREATE-Research Report - Future of Investment, the next move?
15 July 2009

The report, based on a survey of 225 asset managers from 30 countries, responsible for a total of $18.2 trillion of assets, seeks to assess the impact of the recent financial crisis on asset managers and their clients’ behaviours, and analyse the possible scenarios for the evolution of the global asset management industry existing business models.

The findings show clients’ investment behaviours are likely to change which has the potential to either commoditise the industry or revitalize it, or produce an outcome somewhere between these two extremes. New business models will emerge as more firms introduce variable pay structures and consider outsourcing elements of their front, middle and back office to create economies of scale.
