In 2007, Citi established the SOMAR project with experts from “Ser Especial” to generate employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. This organization continues to help employ the disabled and reduce their turnover rate in the areas where they operate.

What began with a few agencies in São Paulo has now expanded across the city and into Rio de Janeiro. These efforts have been recognized by other companies including FEBRABAN (Brazilian Federation of Banks).

  • 50+employees have benefited from the SOMAR program
  • 93%retention rate among participants

Sustaining Progress Through Inclusive Business

v

Since 2015, the Citi Foundation has sponsored the Sustainability and Inclusive Business project – carried out by the Center for Sustainability Studies at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation – to help empower small vegetable and fruit producers around São Paulo. The initiative has brought together representatives from various links in the supply chain including financial institutions, public authorities and civil society organizations in order to foster best practices that help farmers to expand their distribution channels and improve their quality of life.

Future plans include the development of strategies to provide a broader support network for producers. These plans include better access to financial services and expanding public policies that support local food production based on socially and environmentally-friendly practices. The producers also receive individual assistance from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation.

  • 600small farmers assisted from the São Paulo extended metropolitan area
